Public ran as private.

What kind of financial picture would local gov be in right now if each department/division were operated in the same manner as a private company?
What about state government as well? If I spent 200,000.00$ on a project that was frivolous while working for a private company would I keep my job? Why do we tolerate this in local and state government?
